The Government of India is reportedly planning to open new retail store concept to provide day-to-day essentials amid lockdown due to coronavirus (Covid-19).
To be named as ‘Suraksha Stores’, the outlets will be developed over the next 45 days, reported The Hindu BusinessLine citing PTI New Delhi.
‘Suraksha Stores’ will provide essentials ranging from groceries to consumer durables, apparel and salons. The government has plans to open an estimated two million shops.
Sources with direct knowledge of the development said that the local kirana stores will be converted into the new concept.

A top official at a leading FMCG firm was quoted by The Hindu BusinessLine as saying: “The government is planning to create Suraksha Store and Suraksha Circle to ensure hygiene and safety norms across the supply chain.
“More than 50 top FMCG companies have been approached.
“We are with the government, and we have already given our approval to participate in this exercise actively.”
The government is reported to seek help from private firms for this initiative.
Certain health and safety requirements are necessary to be fulfilled by an outlet to become a ‘Suraksha Store’.
The number of coronavirus confirmed cases have crossed 8,000 mark in India, while death toll reached 300.
