Icon Bali is the first lifestyle, culture, and retail centre in Sanur, Bali. It is one of the largest malls in South-East Asia, featuring eight iconic attractions designed to draw both domestic and international visitors.

The project was developed by PT Grha Hatten Duasatu in collaboration with Cinema XXI, Hatten Wines, and Retail First Indonesia.

Construction on the retail centre began in August 2020, and the mall opened to the public in June 2024.

Location of Icon Bali mall

The Icon Bali Mall is situated in the beach destination of Sanur, easily accessible from South Denpasar, North Badung and Gianyar. Sanur is a 20-minute taxi ride from Ngurah Rai International Airport.

The mall was developed as part of a collaboration between the government and the private sector to revitalise Sanur.

Icon Bali mall project details

The Icon Bali mall is a beachfront retail and entertainment destination with a village charm. It has a gross floor area (GFA) of 38,570m² (415,164ft²) and a net lettable area (NLA) of 30,000m².

The eight iconic features of the mall known as ‘8 Wonders of Icon Bali’ include the Icon Bali floating market, a vertical forest, a cultural amphitheatre, the Icon beach promenade, the Icon beach gallery, the sunset sea fountain, a butterfly park, and an edible garden.

The Icon Bali floating market, Jaje, is the largest indoor floating market in South-East Asia, dedicated to local vendors selling Balinese food, desserts, and knick-knacks.

Located on the beach floor of Icon Bali, Jaje seamlessly opens to the beach and sea. The market serves as the hub of cultural activities, featuring more than 30 sellers, mostly home-based small businesses. Visitors can engage directly with sellers operating from boats, shoulder-carried display stands, bicycles, and rickshaws.

The vertical forest is a four-storey immersive structure inspired by the forests and temples of Bali. It features thousands of tropical plants and flowers and offers distinct indoor multimedia experiences on each floor, designed to create social media-friendly moments.

The mall includes parking for 1,100 cars, 700 motorcycles, and a bicycle parking bay, as well as disabled customers.

In addition, the retail centre features amenities such as free Wi-Fi, bank and ATM, money changers, community lawn, prayer room, mother’s room, foot rinse and indoor shower facilities. It also has pet-friendly policies.

Icon Bali Mall design

The design of Icon Bali seamlessly integrates various design disciplines, blending the landscape design into the architecture and interior design of the mall.

The unique façade takes inspiration from the landscape, flora, and fauna of Bali, with the forms of the main façade inspired by terraced rice paddies, a banana leaf (daun pisang), frangipani (kamboja), and a snake fruit (salak).

Indigenous plants and flowers were used for sustainable design in the project. The ‘Salak Facade’ uses Ipomea (Katang-katang), which is found locally in Bali. The interior’s planter boxes and hanging gardens further highlight the atrium’s spatial qualities.

The single corridor layout allows for a smooth flow from indoor retail spaces to outdoor dining at gourmet restaurants, and then onward to the beach club and beach. The water feature of the Jaje market enhances the indoor experience by bringing elements of the outdoors inside. It also functions as a sustainable cooling system for the building, reducing the need for mechanical cooling.

Blending nature with innovation, the architecture of Icon Bali Mall showcases the versatility of eco-friendly materials such as Viro bamboo and Viro ropes.

Entertainment facilities of Icon Bali

The cultural amphitheatre, situated at the west end of the floating market, provides 28 levels of convenient seating for visitors to enjoy their food and drinks in a casual setting.

The amphitheatre faces the cultural stage that hosts daily Balinese dance performances.

The mall also features the IMAX from Cinema XXI and Timezone for entertainment on the first floor.

Outdoor facilities of the Icon Bali Mall

The Icon beach promenade offers clear sunrise views and features the longest bike and jogging track along the beach on the island. The beach slopes naturally, making it walkable during low tide, creating temporary tide pools filled with tropical marine creatures.

The sunset sea fountain presents a sunset laser and water show every afternoon on Icon Bali beach.

The edible garden at Icon Bali cultivates plants that appeal to both locals and tourists, including a Balinese kitchen garden, unique tropical fruits, and Asian medicinal herbs and roots, which are increasingly popular as natural remedies.

The Icon beach gallery, spanning over a 60m white sand beach coastline, serves as a gallery of beach art installations. The butterfly park is another iconic feature that focuses on education and conservation aspects.
