Yowie to remove ‘nut-free’ claim from chocolate packaging

The packaging will also feature a notice regarding the potential for cross-contamination.

Yowie, the company behind the surprise-inside chocolate treats, has announced a change in its packaging to enhance transparency regarding nut allergies. The global confectionery brand originated in Australia in 1995.

The alteration involves the removal of the 'nut-free' claim from the company's chocolate packaging and the addition of a notice on its new packaging.

This notice will state: "Manufactured in a facility that processes peanuts and tree nuts, but not on the same equipment."

Manufacturing facility adjustment

While Yowie's chocolates remain nut-free, the company's manufacturing facility located in New York State, US, where the delicious surprise-inside chocolates are produced, has changed.

The facility now produces chocolate containing tree nuts and peanuts in an adjacent section. The company assures its consumers that Yowie treats are still crafted on dedicated nut-free machinery.

Commitment to nut allergies

Yowie has expressed its commitment to taking nut allergies seriously. The decision to change the packaging aims to provide complete transparency regarding the small potential for cross-contamination.

It is important to note that despite the adjustment in the manufacturing facility and packaging, the Yowie chocolate recipe remains unchanged, free from peanuts and tree nuts, maintaining the same quality standard since 2014.

Yowie Group produces Yowie surprise-inside chocolates, featuring limited-edition collectible animal toys and educational leaflets about real-life endangered animals.

Yowie chocolates are available in more than 30,000 retail outlets across the US.
