In a strategic move to enhance customer satisfaction, Walmart has announced that it has fortified its supply chain, store and delivery capabilities through cutting-edge technology.

It said that the holiday season 2023 marks the debut of its “next-generation supply chain”, promising customers unprecedented convenience and accuracy.

Expanded same-day delivery options

Customers can now select Express Delivery and receive items in as little as 30 minutes. They can also choose Late Night Delivery services until 10:30pm across 4,000 stores.

This is on top of Walmart’s same-day delivery and in-home delivery options.

The retailer can currently reach almost 90% of the US population with next or two-day shipping.

Walmart now has more independent contractors driving on the Spark Driver platform than ever before. With three new fulfilment centres and a robust transportation network, the retailer has increased its same-day delivery capacity to reach more than 80% of the US population.

AI-powered inventory management

Walmart has invested in an AI-powered inventory management system.

This patent-pending system positions products based on regional demand, guaranteeing product availability.

More than 15% of Walmart stores now receive merchandise from automated distribution centres.

By Thanksgiving 2023 (23 November), Walmart said that seven automated market fulfilment centres will be operational, situated within stores to fulfil pickup and delivery orders, ensuring accuracy and minimising substitutions.

Walmart’s three new fulfilment centres in Joliet, McCordsville and Lancaster, spanning 1.5 million square feet each, ensure a broader assortment of items, from clothing to electronics.

AI-driven innovations, expanded delivery options and strategic fulfilment centres underscore Walmart’s commitment to improving the holiday shopping experience.

Traditional AI is here to stay in the retail and apparel space

Initially, retailers used AI for basic tasks, including inventory management and demand forecasting. However, its usage has now become more prevalent in other aspects such as personalized marketing, customer service, pricing optimization, and supply chain management. With the rise of ecommerce and the increasing importance of data-driven decision-making, AI adoption in retail and apparel has accelerated. The industry now relies on AI to enhance the shopping experience, optimize business operations, and gain an overall competitive edge.
