Walmart and General Mills collaborate on sustainable agriculture

The collaboration focuses on supporting farmers in enhancing soil health, water quality, and carbon sequestration throughout their shared value chain.

Multinational retail corporation Walmart has joined forces with food processing company General Mills to drive the expansion of regenerative agriculture across 600,000 acres in the US by 2030. 

The partnership aims to transform agriculture practices

The collaboration focuses on supporting farmers in enhancing soil health, water quality and carbon sequestration throughout their shared value chain. 

Initial projects, spanning crops such as wheat in the Northern and Southern Great Plains, will receive support through grants administered by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF). 

In a statement, General Mills group president of North America retail Jon Nudi said: “Through this partnership, we will work hand-in-hand with Walmart and Sam’s Club to help regenerate the acres of land in the key regions where we source ingredients for our shared business.” 

Industry collaboration

in a statement, General Mills and Walmart said they share a vision that regenerative agriculture can combat climate change while benefiting both people and the planet. 

This joint effort targets seven US states and aligns with the companies’ commitment to industry-wide change, utilising organisational pledges to drive impactful collaboration. 

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) will play a pivotal role by providing financial assistance to local grantee organisations. 

These resources will support the transition to regenerative agriculture, fostering systems change and improving soil health, watersheds, biodiversity, climate change and farmer economic resilience. 

Walmart US executive vice-president US food John Laney stated: “This collaboration is an example of how we are working across our value chain on intentional interventions to help advance regenerative agriculture and ensure surety of supply for these essential food products for the long term.”
