Multinational retail corporation Walmart has revealed plans to open a new high-tech fulfilment centre in Stockton, California.

Scheduled to open in 2026, the proposed 900,000ft² facility is the company’s fifth ‘next generation’ facility.

To be located at 150 Mariposa Road in Stockton, the new facility will feature an automated, high-density storage and retrieval system that will reduce a manual, 12-step process to five.

In addition, the new technology will double the storage capacity and customer orders Walmart can fulfil daily.

It will also expand next- or two-day shipping for Walmart customers.

Walmart US fulfilment network operation senior vice-president Karisa Sprague said: “The announcement of our high-tech fulfilment centre in Stockton commemorates yet another significant stride in our omnichannel retail efforts.

“In response to increasing customer demand for online shopping, we are implementing technology to enhance delivery speed and accuracy for our customers, all the while creating new and exciting technology-empowered career paths for our associates.”

The Stockton fulfilment centre will create more than 1,000 associate jobs. Walmart will hire for various positions, including technology-focused jobs.

Walmart associates will be working with technology and machine learning to deliver faster shipping and delivery on the West Coast.

The retailer operates eight distribution centres and four fulfilment centres in California.

By combining its advanced fulfilment centres with its fulfilment network, Walmart will be able to expand its next- or two-day shipping to 95% of the US population.

Walmart US end-to-end people operation senior vice-president Maren Waggoner said: “I look forward to seeing the positive impact this facility will have on the Central Valley community, creating new opportunities to work with cutting edge technology and lasting career growth with Walmart.”

Recently, Walmart announced the upcoming launch of a milk processing facility in Valdosta, Georgia, set to open in 2025.
