Walmart is expanding its Live Better U (LBU) education programme to equip its associates with the skills needed to fill 100,000 in-demand jobs over the next three years.
This initiative emphasises short, job-specific training and removes college degree requirements for most positions.
Building on a successful programme
Launched in 2018, LBU has already provided more than 126,000 associates with access to college degrees and other learning opportunities.
Now, the programme is shifting its focus to meet the company's specific needs.
Walmart is expanding its short-form certificate offerings, aiming to fill crucial roles in areas such as management, supply chain, technology, and healthcare.
These certificates take an average of four months to complete, allowing faster career progression for motivated associates.
Flexibility and accessibility
Recognising the value of traditional degrees, Walmart is still offering them through partnerships with universities.
However, these programmes are being reviewed to ensure they align with specific job requirements.
Additionally, associates receive credit towards degrees for completing internal training programmes, providing them with more flexibility and control over their educational journeys.
Investing in the future
By prioritising skills-based hiring and developing internal talent, Walmart aims to fill critical positions while offering associates career advancement opportunities.
The retailer said this approach benefits individuals, the company, and the broader workforce, aligning with Walmart's commitment to fostering internal growth and promoting from within.
Walmart said it hopes this initiative inspires other employers to invest in upskilling their workforces, fostering a culture of continuous learning and career development throughout the business community.
