Walmart Canada has announced the grand reopening of its Square One Supercentre in Mississauga, Ontario, as its flagship location - a significant capital investment.
The Mississauga store is Walmart Canada's largest at 223,000ft². It offers an “endless aisle" concept, new signage, updated lighting and digital wayfinding to create an immersive retail experience.
The store will also feature an in-store pickup kiosk for customers without vehicles.
The redesign includes a boutique-style apparel area with updated lighting and digital screens, expanded fresh grocery and global foods sections and a new hot meal counter.
In the electronics department, customers will find dedicated spaces for leading brands such as Apple, Samsung and Google.
The store offers a showroom shopping experience for large-scale items, where customers can scan a QR code to complete their purchases for later pickup.
Walmart Canada is also beta-testing its first SmartShelf [a system that provides information on shelf item movement to prevent merchandise from going out of stock using radio-frequency identification] at this location.
The patent-pending technology is part of Walmart's ongoing efforts to innovate in the retail space.
The store will also feature Canada's first Walmart Health hub: a pharmacy, a vision centre and a medical clinic complemented by a digital pharmacy app.
Store manager Rehman Khalid said: "Today's grand re-opening is a moment of pride for all our associates. It's about more than just a store; it's a celebration of our 30 years of service to the community and the dedication of our incredible team of 400.
"Our flagship store was redesigned with our customers in mind with more products, more services and even more convenience, all at our everyday low prices. I know our customers and associates are going to love what they see – and I can't wait to welcome them."
The Square One Walmart Supercentre opened as one of Walmart Canada's original 122 stores in 1994 and became a supercentre in 2011.
