Vipshop pledges to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030

The retailer’s Logistics Centres recycled around 21.19 million cartons, reducing carton usage by 2,556t last year.

China-based online discount retailer Vipshop has released its Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) report for 2022.

During the year, the company’s Board of Directors, an ESG Committee and an ESG Task Force came together to form a three-tiered governance structure.

Known as the Co-creation of a new sustainable life, the retailer’s new ESG strategy focuses on “new sustainable choices, happy consumption, proactive inclusivity, beautiful society, dependable compliance.”

In its release, Vipshop committed to achieving carbon neutrality in its own operations and a 50% reduction in Scope 3 carbon emissions no later than 2030.

In partnership with consumers, partners and other stakeholders, the retailer has taken on energy-saving measures to lower emissions and offer a sustainable, low-carbon ecosystem.

Last year, the company’s Logistics Centres recycled approximately 21.19 million cartons, reducing carton usage by 2,556 tonnes (t) and reclaiming 16,774t of packaging materials. 

In addition, the retailer installed photovoltaic energy systems at several logistics sites and its Shan Shan Outlets, which generated 61,538MWh of solar power over the year.

Furthermore, the company improved its core business during the year through a series of enhancements in products, operations and technology.

Vipshop noted that its customer problem-solving satisfaction rate stood at 98.01% last year, driven by a specialised team that effectively tackles customer concerns.

The retailer also introduced specialised training courses in 2022, intended to improve employee innovation and individual growth.

It also focused on providing women with a safe, inclusive workspace and a supportive environment.
