Upshop, a provider of software as a service for food retailers, has merged with Invafresh to reform the global food retail technology landscape.

The combined entity, retaining the Upshop name, aims to empower communities worldwide with better access to fresh and affordable food.

The strategic move is expected to address key challenges in the food sector such as availability, affordability and waste.

The new Upshop organisation will offer the first global retail enterprise operating platform designed for the complexities of food retail.

The platform will serve 400 retailers across 35 countries, impacting operations in 50,000 stores and affecting millions of associates and shoppers daily.

Upshop CEO Shamus Hines said: "We do not settle for better - we strive for the best from our platform, our people and our partnerships with food retailers. The impact our technology has on retailers' supply chains means millions of families will have access to the freshest and healthiest food, every day."

The timing of the merger is critical, as the food retail industry approaches a significant regulatory milestone.

FSMA204, a major US Food and Drug Administration compliance requirement, demands improved data traceability capabilities.

Upshop is set to formally launch its solution at the end of July 2024, integrating the best features from both the companies' food safety product suites.

The company also plans to launch a new food waste initiative, leveraging a robust product suite, advanced analytics and strong industry partnerships to support all aspects of food waste management.
