Shops in the UK can expect a busy Christmas Eve for 2023 as last-minute shoppers take it to the last day before the 25th, new research from The Green Insurer suggests.

The nationwide study reveals nearly one in five adults (19%) plan to do some shopping on Christmas Eve while almost all (93%) of adults say they will purchase some items online.

One in four (25%) consumers expect to have completed all their Christmas shopping by December 18th – a week before Christmas Day – with the likelihood that those who haven’t done so may have to rely in part on the high street due to potential delivery delays.

Christmas spending has also been delayed due to financial worries as the cost-of-living crisis continues to grow.

The Green Insurer CEO Paul Baxter commented: “The fact that so many people are waiting to late December before completing their shopping demonstrates that the digital world hasn’t quite wrapped up Christmas yet.”

Meanwhile, major UK retailers such as Asda and Currys are stepping up to make Christmas more affordable and enjoyable for their consumers through personalisation and extended opening hours.

For December 22nd, known as 'Super Saturday', advertising company Criteo finds that 53% of consumers have been saving money in order to pay for holiday expenses and a further 73% have said that this holiday season's budget will be an issue.

Additionally, three in five shoppers (60%) state they'll purchase fewer gifts and invite fewer people over.

January 2024 will be a struggle for all, as retailers will need to convince consumers to continue spending despite their tight budgets through enticing deals.
