In an effort to address the rising concern of organised retail theft, Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw, Toronto Police Services Board Chair Ann Morgan, Toronto Crime Stoppers and corporate partners announced a new crime awareness campaign.

The campaign aims to raise public awareness, especially during the upcoming holiday shopping season. It also encourages citizens to report individuals engaged in retail theft and other criminal activities anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

Anonymous reporting through crime stoppers

As part of the campaign, citizens are encouraged to report individuals involved in organised retail theft or any other criminal activity anonymously.

They can do so by contacting Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or visiting 222tips.com. This anonymous reporting system allows individuals to provide valuable information to law enforcement without fear of retaliation.

The official announcement of this campaign took place on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. in the Media Gallery at Toronto Police Headquarters. The event was broadcast via Dome Productions and live-streamed on YouTube for wider accessibility.

Members of the media were also invited to participate in the news conference in person by presenting identification confirming their affiliation with accredited media outlets.

Security screening at police headquarters

It's important to note that all individuals entering Toronto Police Service headquarters are required to undergo security screening for the safety of employees and visitors.

While screening is not mandatory, those who decline will be denied entry. This measure ensures a safe environment for all attendees and visitors.

The campaign seeks to foster public cooperation in tackling organised retail theft and maintaining a safer community during the holiday season and beyond, says Toronto Police.
