Tarry, instrumental in steering Tesco through a turnaround and pandemic, leaves behind a legacy of enhanced competitiveness and customer-centric practices.

Tarry's leadership impact

During Tarry's six-year tenure as the UK CEO, Tesco flourished, reaching new competitive heights.

Tesco Group CEO Ken Murphy expressed gratitude, highlighting Tarry's contribution to fostering a culture focused on customers and colleagues, stating: “Under his leadership, Tesco today is the most competitive we have ever been, built on exceptionally strong foundations of doing the right thing for our customers and colleagues.”

Reflecting on his departure, Jason Tarry remarked: "My life in Tesco has been an experience and while this decision was not made lightly, I believe it is the right time for me to move on."

Tarry pledged to dedicate himself to his role until March, emphasising a commitment to delivering a Christmas for Tesco's customers.

Leadership transition

Tesco announced the appointment of Matthew Barnes as the incoming UK CEO, effective 1 March 2024. Barnes, who has experience in senior roles at Aldi, is well-prepared to lead Tesco.

Formerly UK & Ireland CEO at Aldi, Barnes's elevation to co-head of Aldi Sud’s Executive Board showcased his global perspective on retail, including responsibilities for international businesses and supply chain operations.

Commenting on Barnes's appointment, Ken Murphy expressed confidence in his ability to drive Tesco's success in the UK market saying: “I believe the combination of Matthew’s extensive retail experience, competitive spirit and challenger mindset will help us continue to win in the UK market.”

Barnes conveyed his excitement, stating: "It is an honour to be appointed as UK CEO and I come to this role with a sense of determination to ensure that we build on the progress of the last number of years and deliver for our customers and colleagues."
