In preparation for the upcoming holiday season, Tesco has initiated a significant recruitment effort, aiming to fill 30,000 temporary positions across the UK.

This presents an opportunity for job-seekers, including students, families seeking financial support, or those looking to re-enter the workforce.

Flexible shifts across UK stores

The temporary roles, primarily located in Tesco’s Superstores and Extra stores, offer flexible shifts—early morning, day, or evening—to accommodate various schedules.

Tesco People Director James Goodman commented on the flexibility of the initiative, stating: “With part-time, temporary roles available across the UK, there are a variety of different shift patterns on offer, making sure these roles fit around different individual needs and lifestyles.”

Diverse tasks, temporary opportunities

The roles encompass a range of tasks, from working on checkouts to picking orders for home delivery or replenishing store shelves. The retailer said these positions provide an avenue for personal and professional development within a diverse and inclusive community.

This is a great opportunity for anyone looking to boost their earnings over the festive period or who needs to find a route back into the workplace.

Moreover, as the seasonal period concludes, Christmas colleagues may explore opportunities to apply for any permanent roles within Tesco stores.

Goodman added: “Our festive roles are a fantastic way to become part of the Tesco team.

“It’s also a fantastic opportunity to meet great people, learn new skills and be part of a diverse team where everyone is welcome.”

Meeting high demand

The influx of temporary colleagues aims to assist Tesco in meeting high demand during the holiday season, enabling customers to make Christmas savings and access exclusive deals on Clubcard Prices at the checkout.

The retailer has also locked low prices on more than 1,000 products until 2024 in an attempt to rival discount store chains such as Aldi. According to GlobalData, this comes as consumers face a 9.3% increase in retail prices this year compared to 2022,

Tesco’s festive hiring initiative follows rivals Sainsbury’s and Aldi.

Aldi said it is gearing up for the festive rush by hiring 3,000 new employees in the UK whilst Sainsbury’s is recruiting 22,000 seasonal staff.
