food solutions company SpartanNash has acquired US-based three-store grocery chain Metcalfe's Market for an undisclosed amount.

The strategic move will see SpartanNash expand its presence in Wisconsin to seven stores, while maintaining the employment of all Metcalfe's Market staff at its Madison and Wauwatosa locations.

Founded in 1917, Metcalfe's Market offers premium quality foods and sustainable practices, including a focus on local products through its Food Miles programme.

Following the acquisition, Metcalfe family members Tim and Kevin Metcalfe, the great-grandsons of the founders, will join SpartanNash.

Customers of Metcalfe's Market can expect the same high-quality products they are accustomed to, along with an expanded selection of SpartanNash private label goods, such as the Our Family product range.

SpartanNash will introduce its loyalty and rewards programme, which offers digital coupons and weekly savings.

The acquisition ensures that full-time Metcalfe's Market team members will retain their health insurance benefits, including medical, vision and dental plans.

The members will also enjoy new perks such as increased paid time off, wellness benefits and tuition reimbursement.

SpartanNash CEO Tony Sarsam stated: "Metcalfe's Market has been a successful family-owned and operated business for four generations, and we are honoured that the Metcalfe family is entrusting SpartanNash to build upon their legacy and bring new offerings to its team members and grocery shoppers.

"As a People First company, we welcome Tim, Kevin and the entire Metcalfe's Market team into the SpartanNash family, and we look forward to earning the loyalty of our newest store guests. As a food solutions company, we provide the ingredients for family meals and traditions – just like Metcalfe's Market has for more than 100 years."

The transaction is expected to close in spring 2024.

In February, SpartanNash expanded the use of Simbe’s autonomous inventory robot, Tally, to 60 more company-operated stores throughout the US Midwest.
