US-based food solutions company SpartanNash is expanding its retail footprint by entering an asset purchase agreement to acquire Markham Enterprises.
Markham Enterprises includes Markham Oil and its affiliates, a three-store chain of convenience stores and a fuel distribution operation located in mid-Michigan.
This acquisition, the second made in October 2024, follows the company's growth trajectory.
SpartanNash's acquisition of Fresh Encounter in early October saw the addition of a 49-store supermarket chain serving Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky.
Markham president and CEO Denise Markham said: "Our team is impressed with SpartanNash's business model and the importance they place on their People First culture. We are excited for the ways SpartanNash will expand this business and continue to serve the Perry, Howell and Lansing communities – and our associates."
Financial terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed. The transaction is set for completion in early December 2024.
SpartanNash will retain all of Markham Enterprises' 42 team members.
SpartanNash executive vice-president and chief strategy and information officer Masiar Tayebi said: "Markham Enterprises fits well in our current retail portfolio, as we look to expand our fuel centre and convenience store footprint."
"We are in the process of refreshing many of our existing fuel centres, so this acquisition is another exciting milestone in our investment in this part of our business – and in our strategic growth plans overall. We will continue to leverage insights from our fuel centres and convenience stores to continuously innovate our products and operations across our wholesale business, unlocking new customer potential."
In April 2024, the company acquired US-based three-store grocery chain Metcalfe’s Market, expanding its presence in Wisconsin to seven stores.
