Supermarket chain SPAR Hungary is financing €14.42m ($16.39m) worth of expansion and modernisation efforts across its store network throughout the country.

The investment includes the inauguration of a new €8.84m supermarket in Szentendre and the opening of an outlet in Kecskemét costing €737,400.

The newly opened Spar supermarket in Szentendre boasts a 2,145m² sales area within a 4,389m² space. It features a multi-level parking facility accommodating more than 100 vehicles and provides jobs for 42 individuals.

The supermarket features a wooden roof façade and offers an extensive selection of products and convenience items, prominently featuring fresh produce from local suppliers.

The store is equipped with self-service refrigerator, chilled goods counter, and SPAR to Go grill counter.

The store also integrates both staffed and self-checkout options with diverse payment methods and includes a recycling machine.

Sustainability features include energy-efficient underfloor heating systems that use waste heat from refrigeration units, LED lighting, and refrigerators with doors to minimise electricity usage.

The new Kecskemét store, which created 23 new jobs, has fresh food sections, a new grill service counter, and self-service checkout facilities while creating 23 new jobs.

Additionally, a sum of €4.85m was allocated to refurbish five existing supermarkets.

In Budapest alone, it invested €1.88m in the refurbishment of one supermarket with updated refrigeration cabinets, vegetable stands, bakery fixtures, shelving units, and cash registers.

Two other Budapest-based supermarkets received a combined investment of €1.42m for renovations that included an improved layout design and energy-saving LED lighting.

Additional modernisations continued with nearly €710,000 spent on upgrading the Csorna store. Enhancements included an expanded fruit and vegetable section and the installation of new refrigeration units with an eco-friendly carbon dioxide-based system.

The retailer also invested €710,000 to refurbish its Tatabánya store.

In December 2024, Spar Hungary invested €2.9m ($3.06m) into the refurbishment of the INTERSPAR hypermarket in Székesfehérvár.
