Supermarket chain SPAR Hungary has enhanced consumer encounters and endorsed environmental stewardship with capital allocations for the modernisation and expansion of its network.

The enterprise has channelled €2.9m ($3.06m) into the refurbishment of the INTERSPAR hypermarket in Székesfehérvár.

The establishment now has contemporary refrigeration technology, with an emphasis on material recycling during the renovation process.

Its retail space is unchanged but its reimagined layout facilitates a more streamlined and systematic shopping journey through beverages, dairy products, frozen items and general merchandise.

Employing 81, the hypermarket is equipped with LED illumination, a carbon dioxide-infused refrigeration mechanism capable of heat reclamation, and refrigerators with energy-conserving doors.

SPAR Hungary also allocated more than €1.7m to enhance three supermarkets situated in Miskolc, Sopron and Tatabánya.

These upgrades focused on interior redesigns, energy conservation and sustainable practices.

In Sopron, an investment exceeding €697,000 has rejuvenated the store layout, fortified the produce section and revamped checkout zones.

Tatabánya's supermarket received €689,000 to reposition its entrance and refine the store arrangement. This included updating the deli section with grilled offerings and putting in modernised checkouts.

Miskolc's €407,000 renovations included SPAR Hungary's signature design.

SPAR Hungary has also achieved a milestone with the inauguration in Lenti of its 300th store operated by independent retailers Fe-Zo Kft. Fe-Zo Kft also runs four independently managed stores in the west of the country.

Following comprehensive renovations that introduced advanced equipment and design elements, the Lenti convenience store occupies a 286m² space and offers freshly baked products, deli services, meat counters and a self-serve cheese area.

SPAR Hungary, which launched in 2012, plans to inaugurate seven further stores by the end of 2025. The independent retailer network has 300 stores, collectively employs close to 3,700 individuals and achieved a turnover of €328m in the preceding year.

In May 2024, SPAR Hungary announced an investment of €9.2m in a greenfield project to establish a supermarket in Szentendre.
