US discount grocery chain Save A Lot and Yellow Banana, a grocery platform that owns and operates Save A Lot locations, have announced the re-opening of six renovated grocery stores across the city of Chicago, Illinois.

The first is already open, with others set to follow during the autumn of 2024.

The retailer has added new flooring, lighting, equipment, HVAC [heating, ventilation and air conditioning] systems, dairy and meat cases, paint, décor, fixtures and signage.

These enhancements aim to improve the shopping experience and create a welcoming atmosphere for customers.

The renovation also highlights Save A Lot's and Yellow Banana’s commitment to fresh and affordable groceries while improving the local economy.

The project faced challenges such as construction delays, supply chain issues and vandalism that led to power outages lasting nearly three months.

Its completion represents a joint effort between Yellow Banana, the city of Chicago, city representatives including 28th Ward Alderman Jason Ervin and 17th Ward Alderman David Moore, and community organisations such as the Garfield Park Community Council and Greater Auburn Gresham Development Corporation.

Yellow Banana CEO Joe Canfield said: “We are proud to take steps to re-introduce the Save A Lot brand to Chicago by re-opening our stores.

“I’m confident that the investment made to remodel and upgrade these stores will pay off for shoppers, providing a significantly improved customer experience. We’re grateful to the city of Chicago, to the communities around these stores and to Save A Lot for their patience and support throughout this process. We look forward to serving these neighbourhoods with pride.”

Save A Lot is one of the largest independently owned and operated discount grocery store chains in the US, operating 750 stores in 32 states.
