Sports footwear and apparel retailer Puma has been named by TIME Magazine in its list of the World’s Most Sustainable Companies.

The company scored 73.02 out of 100 possible points and ranked 67th out of 500 companies across various sectors.

TIME created the list with data firm Statista, measuring Scope 1 and 2 emissions and energy consumption relative to company size, emissions reductions in 2021 and 2022, and the proportion of renewable energy used in company operations.

Scope 1 emissions are directly caused by a company and Scope 2 are indirectly created when a company purchases power.

In early 2024, Puma announced that it reached its science-based CO₂ reduction target seven years ahead of schedule.

The company has also focused on introducing renewable electricity at its core suppliers, using product-materials that are less carbon-intensive, opting for low-carbon shipping tariffs, and investing in electric vehicles in its car fleet.

For its owned and operated buildings, Puma buys renewable energy tariffs and renewable energy attribute certificates.

The choice of materials used in Puma’s products is also an integral part of its sustainability strategy. In 2023, the company produced eight out of ten products with a significant part of recycled and certified materials such as recycled polyester.

Puma chief sourcing officer Anne-Laure Descours stated: “Being ranked among the most sustainable companies by such a prestigious publication is a great recognition of our FOREVER. BETTER. sustainability strategy. We will take this as an incentive to work even harder and continue to reduce our environmental footprint.”

The highest-ranking retailer on TIME’s list is Italian luxury fashion house Moncler which came third, recognised for its use of recycled materials and renewable electricity at its directly managed offices, stores, factories, and logistics hubs.
