Poundland has announced the successful completion of its new store and relocation initiative for the quarter.
During this period, Poundland has welcomed 962 former Wilko colleagues into its team, marking a significant stride in the company's expansion efforts.
In the 64 reopened Wilko locations, Poundland has appointed 826 former Wilko colleagues on hourly paid contracts.
Additionally, 122 individuals have taken up roles as Poundland store managers or assistant store managers.
Further broadening its workforce, Poundland has welcomed 14 former Wilko colleagues to its main customer support centre in Walsall.
This recruitment drive aligns with Poundland's commitment to creating employment opportunities amid its store expansion.
Future opportunities and store offer enhancements
Looking ahead, Poundland anticipates further opportunities for former Wilko colleagues as it secures leases on additional Wilko stores.
The company plans to open new Poundland stores in former Wilko units in 2024, surpassing the 71 lease options obtained in September.
All recruitment efforts have been conducted through word-of-mouth and social media, with regular online posts outlining available opportunities.
While Poundland plans additional makeovers for newly acquired locations in 2024, it has already begun enhancing offerings in recently launched stores.
Chilled and frozen food sections have been added to 18 former Wilko stores, enhancing the range of products available to customers in locations such as Barnsley (Wombwell), Brentwood, and Leicester.
Temporary hires for the festive season and store closure on holidays
In preparation for the holiday season, Poundland has recruited 1,200 temporary colleagues across the UK and Ireland to assist in stores during the Christmas rush.
While the majority of these temporary roles will conclude on Christmas Eve, some may be extended until early January.
To allow its dedicated colleagues some rest, Poundland has made the decision to close its stores on both Boxing Day and New Year's Day.
Simon Wells, people director at Poundland, expressed gratitude towards the Poundland team for its efforts in swiftly providing numerous roles to those affected by the Wilko administration.
He emphasised the company's pride in making a positive impact on hundreds of former Wilko team members who have chosen to continue their careers at Poundland.
Expanding presence with 87 new stores and updated clothing ranges
Notably, Poundland completed the opening of 87 new stores in just 70 days, including 64 former Wilko locations.
The company has also expanded its footprint in flagship locations such as Birmingham Fort and Watford, where it now operates from a former John Lewis store.
The latest Pepco family clothing, featured in more than 600 Poundland stores, includes new ranges from lifestyle and athleisure brands, including Cardio Bunny and Bekkin.
Additionally, there has been a substantial increase in space dedicated to baby and childwear in all new Poundland stores, both Wilko and non-Wilko units.
