The top five companies accounted for 16% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Alibaba Group filed the most environmental sustainability patents within the retail industry in Q3 2024. The company filed 8 environmental sustainability-related patents in the quarter, compared with 5 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Aizen Global with 5 environmental sustainability patent filings, Outerwall (4 filings), and Occidental Petroleum (4 filings) in Q3 2024.
Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 24% share of total patent filings
The largest share of environmental sustainability related patent filings in the retail industry in Q3 2024 was in the US with 24%, followed by China (5%) and Japan (5%). The share represented by the US was 12% higher than the 12% share it accounted for in Q2 2024.
