The country's retail industry has been vocal in its calls for greater protection for staff following concerning figures.

A landmark shift in legal protections for retail workers is imminent, as the UK government prepares to introduce a standalone offence for assaulting, threatening, or abusing retail staff, the Times reported.

The new legislation, to be outlined in the upcoming Crime and Policing Bill, is reportedly a direct response to a surge in violence and abuse experienced by frontline retail employees.

The domestic retail industry has been vocal in its calls for greater protection for staff, with mounting evidence highlighting the severity of the issue.

According to the Times, Tesco, the UK’s largest grocer, has reported a shocking increase in assaults on its employees, with an average of 11 incidents occurring daily during the festive period.

The use of weapons in serious incidents has also risen dramatically, with 39% of such cases involving a weapon in the first quarter of this year.

These figures are indicative of a wider problem affecting the entire retail sector.

The British Retail Consortium has recorded a 50% increase in incidents against staff in the past year, equating to more than 1,300 incidents daily.

This alarming trend has prompted widespread concern and calls for urgent action.

While the pandemic exacerbated the issue, underlying factors such as increased organised crime, reduced staffing levels due to technological advancements, and a perceived decline in police resources have also contributed to the problem.

Despite significant investments in security measures by retailers, the frequency and severity of attacks continue to rise.

The Times noted the Scottish national government’s introduction of a standalone offence for assaulting retail workers in 2021 has proven effective, with a substantial increase in charges for violence-related incidents.

This success story has generated momentum for similar legislation to be introduced in England and Wales.

Industry leaders and retail workers alike have welcomed the impending law change, viewing it as a crucial step towards creating a safer working environment.

The new offence is expected to send a strong message to perpetrators, deterring future attacks and providing vital support for those affected.

As the retail sector continues to grapple with the challenges posed by rising crime, the introduction of this new legislation marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to protect and support frontline retail workers.
