Morrisons warehouse employees end strike after accepting new terms 

In June 2024, hundreds of warehouse and logistics employees walked out in a pay, pensions and working conditions dispute.

British supermarket chain Morrisons has successfully resolved the industrial action at its warehouses after workers agreed to a new deal. 

In May 2024, hundreds of employees associated with warehouse and logistics work at Morrisons across the UK's Cheshire and Yorkshire locations decided to walk out over the dispute, which centred on pay, pensions and working conditions. 

On 17 June, workers voted to accept the new terms and conditions offered by the Bradford-headquartered supermarket chain, which addressed their concerns and resulted in the cancellation of further strikes planned for June.  

British and Irish trade union Unite has expressed satisfaction with the outcome, describing it as "an important workplace victory".  

Unite General Secretary Sharon Graham said: “I'm delighted they have achieved their goals and that the supermarket has seen sense and come up with an acceptable outcome.”   

The new deal, finalised after a ballot, ensures that Morrisons workers will maintain their current pension contributions, safeguarding their financial future.  

Morrisons has also introduced a Service Award scheme, rewarding employees with up to £350 ($444) for reaching long service milestones. 

From 1 July 2024, employees will benefit from a 9% pay rise across all rates, including weekend and freezer allowances, while retaining additional pay for anti-social hours.  

Unite has also secured commitments from Morrisons to review "pick rates" and job roles transparently, with full union participation. 

Unite national officer Adrian Jones said: “Our members took to the picket line and were prepared to disrupt supplies to Morrisons’ stores to make their anger felt. They stood strong and have won an important workplace victory including improved pay and conditions as well as protecting their pension contributions.  

“Instead of being hundreds of pounds out of pocket, they are thousands of pounds up. This is further evidence that if you want your employer to hear your voice loud and clear, join a union."
