The Manitoba government of Canada has announced its ongoing support for the Winnipeg Police Service's (WPS) initiatives against retail theft during the 2024 holiday season.   

In an announcement made by Justice Minister Matt Wiebe, 12 new provincially funded Winnipeg police officers are set to patrol in specified areas from November 2024. 

This follows the success of the retail theft and violent crime overtime initiative. 

The latest initiative is intended to provide a visible presence and engage with the community in specified areas.  

Matt Wiebe said: “We’re grateful to the Winnipeg Police Service and their members who have made such a positive impact throughout the summer and fall for businesses and community members.  

“Over the summer, people in the Exchange District, Osborne Village, the West End and other parts of the city have said they feel safer. We look forward to maintaining that momentum throughout the holiday season.” 

The bolstered police measures are part of a broader strategy to ensure safety in Winnipeg's core areas.  

The Manitoba government, the mayor's office and Downtown Winnipeg BIZ have already injected almost $1.5m ($1.08m) in funding for initiatives such as the Downtown Community Safety Partnership and the development of a voluntary safe sobering centre at N'Dinawemak, called Our Relatives' Place. 

Canada Retail Council government relations (prairie region) director John Graham said: “The impact of the retail theft initiative has been phenomenal, as provincial funding has allowed Winnipeg Police Service to more effectively respond to the safety and security issues retail stores have been facing for too long. 

“We are grateful that this support will continue and help support retailers as they head into the very busy and important holiday shopping season.” 

This announcement follows a summer and fall period during which the Manitoba government provided $1.9m to support an increased police presence in areas identified by WPS.
