Lidl GB has reported that its sales for the 2024 holiday season grew by almost 7% compared to the previous year, as over two million additional customers frequented its stores.

For the first time, the retailer’s turnover surpassed the £1bn mark in the four-week period leading up to Christmas Eve.

In preparation for the festive season, Lidl GB expanded its British supply base by 20%.

The retailer reported impressive sales figures, including more than 16 million British pigs in blankets.

British turkeys remained a popular choice among consumers, with sales reaching a rate of one per second. Three-quarters of a million of its roasting joints featured on dinner tables nationwide.

The discounter made it possible for households to have a full Christmas dinner at an exceptionally low cost of £1.78 per person. In addition, shoppers bought 6,500t of British vegetables from Lidl’s Pick of the Week selection at just 8p each.

This initiative was funded entirely by the retailer, aligning with its longstanding support for British agriculture and ensuring that farmers' payments remained unaffected.

The Lidl Plus loyalty programme saw significant growth with a 25% increase in users year-on-year and a 75% uptick in customers leveraging weekly discounts.

Lidl GB CEO Ryan McDonnell said: “For three decades, Lidl has been providing households with access to unbeatable quality and value at Christmas. This year, we were thrilled to welcome more customers than ever before. That’s a strong reflection of the trust our customers place in us and the dedication of our colleagues and suppliers, who work so hard to deliver an outstanding Christmas for the communities we serve.

“In 2024, we continued to raise the bar with product innovation, especially within our Deluxe range, as well as supporting all the community initiatives that are deeply important to us. It’s all been about bringing people together and sharing the joy of Christmas.

“Looking ahead, we’re excited to build on our momentum, growing our presence across the country and continuing to deliver the highest quality at the best prices on the market.”

In October 2024, Lidl GB announced plans to open ten new stores ahead of Christmas, creating 400 jobs.
