Lidl GB to adopt electronic shelf labels across all stores

The transition is projected to save more than 206t of carbon each year.

Discount retailer Lidl GB has embarked on a significant overhaul of its pricing display system by adopting electronic shelf labels (ESLs) across all its stores.

The initiative follows a successful trial in 35 locations including Epsom and Tooting. The trial began in September 2022.

The transition is projected to save 206t of carbon each year by reducing paper and packaging, as well as significantly cutting down on ink usage.

The trial revealed that more than two-thirds of customers did not notice the change, suggesting a smooth transition from paper tags to ESLs.

The technology improves store operations by integrating seamlessly without affecting the shopping experience.

By automating price updates, staff can now allocate more time to customer service and restocking shelves, thereby enhancing overall efficiency.

Lidl GB director of sales organisation Isaac Ekpenyong said: “As a discounter, sustainability and efficiency run deep in our DNA. Making changes to how we operate, no matter how big or small, allows us to enhance the overall experience for those shopping with us.

“We’re empowering colleagues by freeing up more of their time to dedicate to tasks that directly benefit our customers. But our transition to electronic shelf labels is more than that: it is another step we are taking to reduce our impact on the environment by curbing paper and ink consumption.”

During 2024 the company will begin the rollout of ESLs gradually, targeting specific sections within each store.

Lidl GB anticipates that the full implementation of ESLs across its entire network of stores will be completed by the end of the year.

In January 2024, Lidl GB announced an investment of £37m to increase wages for its hourly-paid employees.
