Hypermarket chain SPAR Austria has unveiled its new INTERSPAR hypermarket bakery facility in Marchtrenk.
The €19.7m facility took one year and three months to build and will supply bread and pastries to SPAR hypermarkets and selected stores.
The new facility spans 3,800m² across two floors and features a 70m² dedicated baking space. It will produce 130 different types of bread, pastries and confectionery products.
Located near SPAR Austria's regional headquarters, the bakery optimises logistics processes and creates synergies. It will deliver its wide range of products to all INTERSPAR hypermarkets along with selected SPAR and EUROSPAR stores in Upper Austria and Salzburg.
Combining modern technology with traditional baking methods, the facility's ovens include an eight-day oven and four rack ovens that contribute to producing high-quality baked goods efficiently.
With sustainability in mind, the new bakery has been built to operate entirely without fossil fuels. It utilises heat recovery systems from oven exhaust air and refrigeration waste heat, is powered by 100% green electricity and uses natural CO₂ as a refrigerant.
The bakery employs 38 bakers and confectioners, with plans to hire 17 more staff. From 2025, the facility will also offer apprenticeships for young individuals interested in the trade.
INTERSPAR Austria managing director Johannes Holzleitner stated: “With the opening of our INTERSPAR hypermarkets bakery in Marchtrenk, we are setting new standards in the combination of traditional craftsmanship and technical innovations. This is where products are created that not only impress with their quality but also with their sustainable production process.”
In October 2024, SPAR Austria Group’s IT division SPAR-ICS inaugurated a new 1,200m² IT hub at its campus in Vienna, as it prioritises the digital transformation of its business and service operations.
