Home furnishing retailer IKEA has partnered with Mer, a European supplier of charging solutions, to establish a network of electric vehicle (EV) charging points at its stores in Germany.

The partners will install more than 1,000 new EV charging points up to 2026, serving customers, employees and last-mile delivery vans across 54 IKEA locations in the country.

Each IKEA location will feature an average of 19 charging points, with the first operational by spring 2025.

The partners then plan to expand the service as required.

The electricity will be sourced entirely from renewable energy, backed by guarantees of origin.

The initiative aligns with the EU's green agreement and its "Fit for 55" ambition to reduce CO₂ emissions from transport by using 100% renewable energy.

IKEA Germany managing director and chief sustainability officer Walter Kadnar stated: "We are proud to make electric mobility accessible to even more people with the newly emerging charging network.

“At IKEA, we want to improve people's everyday lives. This includes finding ways to make it as easy as possible for them to make more sustainable choices. The charging points that we are creating with our partner Mer will be available for delivery vehicles as well as for our employees, customers and all electric car drivers."

The two companies previously announced a similar charging infrastructure project in the UK, one of the largest last-mile charging rollouts in the region.

In December 2023, IKEA launched an AI-driven demand-sensing technology, marking a significant move towards transforming its customers’ shopping experience.
