Swedish home furnishing retailer IKEA is piloting do-it-yourself delivery solutions aimed at urban customers in select European cities.

The new service is intended to assist IKEA shoppers without personal vehicles in transporting their purchases home.

The company is trialling rentable solutions at IKEA Utrecht in the Netherlands, IKEA Westbahnhof Vienna in Austria and IKEA Gallerian Stockholm in Sweden.

The offerings include a trolley for pedestrians or bus commuters, an electric four-wheeled bike with a storage compartment, an electric cargo bike and an electric trailer that can either be walked with or hitched to a bicycle.

These solutions are available for rent at a price for the duration of the trial period.

Ingka Group global core service manager Alastair Morgan stated: "Not everyone has access to a car in urban locations, and public transport isn’t always ideal for large items. IKEA aims to serve the many, but traditional home delivery isn’t always suitable.

“We’re exploring DIY delivery solutions to offer more accessible, affordable and convenient take-home options. This initiative reduces dependency on delivery services, increases customer satisfaction, and aligns with our vision for a more sustainable, customer-centric retail experience."

IKEA is also broadening its existing pick-up locker service for customers residing at a distance from its stores and seeking a more cost-effective alternative to direct home delivery services.

The Development and Innovation Network - a joint effort between Inter IKEA Group and all its franchisees including Ingka - has partnered with an external company to develop modular lockers that can be situated in external spots.

The lockers are currently installed in four UK supermarket parking areas with plans to add a further six, along with two in Belgium and one in the Netherlands.

This setup allows customers to retrieve their orders at any time from locations that are more convenient to their homes or workplaces.

Initiated in November 2024, this test has yielded impressive results with high customer satisfaction ratings. Customers particularly value the convenience of combining grocery shopping with IKEA order pickups.

Inter IKEA Group supply chain innovation head Peter Ac stated: "We are always looking for ways to make shopping more convenient and accessible. By testing pick-up lockers in new locations, we’re bringing IKEA closer to where people live, making it easier to collect purchases at a time and place that suits them. This is one of many ways we’re exploring and co-creating smarter, more flexible delivery solutions with our trusted collaborators for our customers."

In February 2025, IKEA inaugurated a new smaller-scale urban store format within the Mall of Scandinavia, Stockholm.
