Home furnishing retailer IKEA UK and Ireland has revealed plans to open a new store in Brighton city centre, UK.

The announcement comes as Ingka Centres, part of the Ingka Group, which also includes IKEA Retail, acquired Churchill Square, a shopping centre in Brighton, for an estimated £145m ($177.26m).

The move is part of IKEA’s ongoing transformation to make products more accessible to customers.

The new IKEA City Store will be located on the site of the former department store Debenhams. It will offer a range of the company’s products, some of which will be eligible for delivery through zero-emission vehicles.

It will be the retailer’s third city centre store in the UK after Hammersmith and Oxford Street and its first outside London. IKEA did not provide a timeline for the opening.

IKEA UK & Ireland country retail manager and chief sustainability officer Peter Jelkeby said: “We continue to transform as we respond to our customers’ needs and dreams, today and tomorrow.

“As one of the most innovative and exciting markets in the world for retail and e-commerce, we will step up our omnichannel investments, both in Brighton and the rest of the country, with a simple goal: to become more customer centric, so that people can shop with us for a better, more sustainable life at home, whenever, wherever and however they choose.”

Churchill Square, which is located on the main shopping high street of Brighton, houses Apple, Next, Inditex, H&M, Urban Outfitters and Levi’s.

The acquired site has three car parks where Ingka Centres plans to install electric vehicle charging points.

Last month, IKEA UK reported a turnover of £2.46bn in the 2023 financial year, with sales increasing by 11.9% compared to the previous year.
