Carrefour’s Middle East franchisee Majid Al Futtaim has announced the suspension of Carrefour Jordan, to be replaced with a new brand called Hypermax

No specific reasons were given for the change.

The move comes after Carrefour Jordan announced on its Facebook page that it would cease operations in the country.

In an emailed statement reported by Reuters, Majid Al Futtaim noted that it “regularly reviews and assesses its businesses to ensure it remains agile in adapting to evolving market dynamics."

Majid Al Futtaim, which introduced Carrefour to the region in 1995, has indicated that Hypermax will be a “brand-new Arab grocery chain” rolled out across all 34 of its stores in Jordan.

The new brand is designed to cater to the needs of Jordanian customers, focusing on their preference for locally-sourced products.

Hypermax will provide both in-store and online services, offering competitive prices, high-quality products and tailored deals for individuals and families across Jordan.

The chain, featuring hypermarkets, supermarkets and convenience stores, will also introduce customer loyalty programmes and exclusive promotions.

Majid Al Futtaim holds the rights to operate the Carrefour brand in more than 30 countries across the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

The company operates more than 465 Carrefour stores in 14 countries, serving more than 770,000 customers daily and employing 37,000 people.

Carrefour Group opened its first 50 stores in Israel in May 2023 under a franchise partnership formed with Israeli group Electra Consumer Products and its subsidiary Yenot Bitan in March 2022.
