Rapid grocery delivery company Getir has completed the acquisition of US-based online grocery retailer FreshDirect.
The completion follows an agreement between food retail group Ahold Delhaize US and Getir in November 2023.
Headquartered in the Bronx, New York, FreshDirect serves customers in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
The company operates a fleet of 400 trucks and a 640,000ft² production and distribution centre.
It has an annual turnover of $650m and employs 3,000 people.
The acquisition will improve its technological infrastructure and offer fast deliveries.
FreshDirect customers and DeliveryPass subscriptions will not be affected.
At the time of signing the agreement, Ahold Delhaize USA CEO JJ Fleeman stated: “This was a difficult decision, especially given FreshDirect’s rich history in the New York City area.
“However, our strength as a grocery retailer in the US is the true omnichannel experience – a combination of online and in-store – where we have leading brands and market share, strong store density and online presence, and a deep heritage of customer loyalty and relationships. With this decision, we will increase our focus on omnichannel – our biggest growth opportunity.”
Getir will expedite its fast delivery business in the US using the diverse product portfolio of high-quality food products and broad customer base acquired through FreshDirect.
Founded in 2015, Getir provides grocery delivery services within ten to 15 minutes in five countries.
In December 2022, Getir also acquired Gorillas, a rapid delivery firm based in Germany, for $1.2bn (€1.1bn).
