India-based e-commerce marketplace Flipkart has revealed plans to create more than 100,000 direct and indirect jobs to meet the demand of the festive season.

The retailer will offer job opportunities across its supply chain, including fulfilment centres, sortation centres and delivery hubs.

In a press statement, Flipkart said that the hiring drive will create opportunities for diverse supply chain talent such as local Kirana delivery partners, women and persons with disabilities (PWDs).

New hirings will undergo training in the supply chain process for their respective function and will be trained to use hand-held devices, point-of-sale machines, scanners, various mobile applications and more.

The announcement to increase the workforce comes as Flipkart scaled its supply chain with last-mile distribution hubs and large-scale fulfilment centres this year.

The e-commerce added more than 1.9 million ft² of space across Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Bihar, Punjab, Rajasthan, Telangana and other states.

Through its Kirana delivery programme, Flipkart plans to deliver more than 40% of shipments during the festive event.

Flipkart Group senior vice-president, supply chain, customer experience and re-commerce head Hemant Badri said: “This year, we are also creating over a lakh new job opportunities in our supply chain while also investing in skilling initiatives to deliver an elevated customer experience as we strengthen our footprint across the country.

“As we continue to broaden our supply chain capabilities each year, we aim to not only enhance the prosperity of our partners but also to amplify their contributions in expanding our delivery spectrum of diverse products across remote corners of India.”

Last month, Walmart-owned Flipkart opened its first grocery fulfilment centre in Ludhiana, Punjab.

COVID-19 drove rapid digitalization within the retail and apparel sector

As ecommerce experienced booming growth during the COVID-19 pandemic, retailers accelerated their digitalization strategies to keep up with demand. The cloud has become an important model for delivering and maintaining enterprise IT resources. Many retailers have developed in-house cloud divisions that will allow them to better exploit the cloud’s capabilities. However, for those players that do not have the necessary skills in-house, the cloud can pose some significant challenges.
