Crocs launches retail takeback pilot programme 

The programme will initially start across ten US states, with plans to expand across the country

Footwear brand Crocs is introducing a retail takeback pilot programme in the US to address environmental concerns.

This initiative encourages Crocs consumers to recycle their old shoes by bringing them to select Crocs retail stores.

In doing so, consumers can contribute to the brand's circularity ambitions.

Participation across ten US states

The pilot programme started on 27 October for customers in ten states in the US: Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin.

Each participating store will feature designated collection boxes, streamlining the process for fans eager to join the movement. 

Participants can receive a complimentary ‘Crocs Saver’ Jibbitz charm while supplies last. 

Crocs and fans collaborate for a sustainable future

Crocs vice president and global head of sustainability Deanna Bratter expressed excitement about this stride toward a circular economy, stating: "This pilot programme aims to address both environmental and social challenges faced by the fashion industry when it comes to product waste. Together with our fans, we can unlock innovation and partnerships to effectively reduce waste, reuse our materials, keep shoes out of landfills and help people in need."

Collected shoes will be donated to Soles4Souls, a non-profit organisation dedicated to creating local economic benefits through entrepreneurship and job opportunities. 

Well-loved pairs that are no longer wearable will undergo creative repurposing, potentially finding new life as upcycled materials for manufacturing new Crocs shoes. 

This initiative marks the latest chapter in Crocs' commitment to a circular economy, building upon previous efforts in material innovation, biobased Croslite integration, industry collaborations and community partnerships. 

The success of the pilot programme will pave the way for future phases, with plans to expand the programme to all US Crocs retail and online stores. 

Deanna added: "Our responsibility extends beyond the sale of our product. We want to keep Crocs products in use for as long as possible."
