Convenience retail chain Copec has partnered with Grabango to modernise its stores across South America.
From 2024, Grabango will deploy checkout-free technology across Copec’s 100 stores in the region, in a move to deliver a fast and easy checkout experience.
Grabango's artificial intelligence (AI) platform uses computer vision to process millions of simultaneous transactions.
The scalable technology will help retailers to reduce shrinkage, while improving shopper loyalty and store operations.
The system can be installed without altering store layout or product mix. It does not require wired shelves, special carts or entry gates.
Copec chief development officer Leonardo Ljubetic stated: “We are excited to bring Grabango’s industry-leading checkout-free tech to South America. We have seen impressive shopper uptake in our former US stores and wanted to expand the innovation to shoppers in Latin America.
“Grabango’s seamless checkout system will accelerate our First in Service programme by simplifying the shopping experience, delighting our loyal customers and drawing new traffic to our Pronto stores.”
Headquartered in Santiago, Chile, Copec operates a network of more than 3,000 retail locations in South and Central America and the Caribbean.
The retailer, which is a part of Empresas Copec, also operates a fast charge network for electric vehicles.
Grabango founder and CEO Will Glaser stated: “This partnership is a milestone for Grabango and the industry as a whole. Copec is one of the most innovative global retailers, and we are honoured to be working with them across the Americas.”
In February 2024, Grabango partnered with US-based convenience store chain Coen Markets to open two checkout-free stores in Pennsylvania, US.
