A serious incident unfolded on Tuesday, November 5, when a supermarket employee was stabbed inside the ASDA store at Stepney Green’s Anchor Retail Park.

Police and paramedics responded to emergency calls shortly before noon, finding a male staff member in his 30s with a stab wound to his thigh. The victim was immediately transported to a major trauma centre, with medical staff determining his injuries to be non-life-threatening.

An ASDA spokesperson commented, “We are in contact with our colleague and are providing ongoing support to him. Our thoughts are with him, as well as any colleagues or customers who witnessed this incident.”

"Urgent enquiries underway" for suspect

Following the attack, the Metropolitan Police quickly launched an investigation and have prioritised identifying and locating the suspect. In a statement, police confirmed, "Urgent enquiries are underway to identify and apprehend the suspect.

At this early stage, there has been no arrest.” Officers continue to gather evidence and review store surveillance footage.

The ASDA location was temporarily closed as police conducted on-site investigations. Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward to aid their efforts.

Call for stronger protections for retail workers

In light of the incident, ASDA reiterated its stance on workplace safety, emphasising the need for increased legal protections for retail employees.

The spokesperson added, "No colleague should come to work in fear of being attacked. We continue to advocate for acts of violence or abuse against retail workers to be recognised as a standalone criminal offence.”

This incident comes just ahead of Respect for Shopworkers Week, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by retail staff across the country.

Anyone with relevant details regarding the attack is encouraged to contact the Metropolitan Police.
