E-commerce major Amazon has announced plans to hire 250,000 full-time, part-time and seasonal employees across the US before the upcoming holiday season.

The roles will be spread across the company's customer fulfilment and transportation operations.

However, there is no disclosure on what percentage of the seasonal headcount will be stationed in fulfilment centres or as transport staff.

The roles within the transportation sector will not include delivery service partners or their respective teams, according to Reuters, citing an Amazon spokesperson.

The e-commerce giant has also committed $2.2bn to enhance pay for its fulfilment and transportation staff.

This move is expected to bring the average total compensation to more than $29 per hour, inclusive of the value of elected benefits.

Amazon ensures that all seasonal employees will receive a minimum hourly wage of $18, along with access to comprehensive benefits such as health care coverage from the first day of employment.

In addition, the company offers its workforce the flexibility to access earned pay at any time and offers health, vision, and dental insurance from day one on the job.

Amazon global operations employee experience vice-president Sandy Gordon said: “While a seasonal or part-time role can be great for someone looking to make some extra income over the holidays - if an employee is looking for career growth, these jobs can be a great way to see if Amazon is a good long-term fit for them."

The latest news follows Amazon's announcement to hire over 15,000 seasonal employees across its UK network of fulfilment centres, sortation centres, and delivery stations.

Meanwhile, last month, department store chain Macy’s said that it will recruit more than 31,500 workers for this year's US holiday season.
