Spanish trade union Confederation syndical de Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) has called on workers at Amazon in Spain to stage strikes for two days next week, according to a report by Reuters.

Approximately 20,000 warehouse and delivery workers at the retailer’s local unit will launch a one-hour strike on each shift on 'Cyber Monday', which will occur on 27 November and 28 November.

The e-commerce retailer reportedly has three working shifts a day in Spain.

The planned walkouts are intended to demand better pay and safer working conditions.

Cyber Monday, the first working day after Thanksgiving, is considered an important day for retailers as most consumers start ordering gifts for Christmas.

Reuters quoted CCOO secretary general for Amazon Douglas Harper as saying: "It is symbolic, but it is a first move and we will consider other kind of actions in the future."

The trade union, which is said to have the highest union representativeness in Spain, claims that wages given to the workers are not reflective of their workload and need to be improved.

The union is also seeking an improvement in the labour safety of workers. This demand follows as Amazon logistics workers on both sides of the Atlantic have increasingly raised complaints about unsafe working conditions.

A local Amazon spokesperson said: "Our staff in all of Spain already work in a safe and modern environment with competitive wages and benefits."

In October 2023, a report by the Guardian revealed that workers at the retailer’s warehouse in Coventry, UK, will launch a strike for four days this month over wages.

In July this year, Spanish antitrust regulator CNMC fined Amazon for cooperating with Apple to restrict competition on its platform in Spain.

Traditional AI is here to stay in the retail and apparel space

Initially, retailers used AI for basic tasks, including inventory management and demand forecasting. However, its usage has now become more prevalent in other aspects such as personalized marketing, customer service, pricing optimization, and supply chain management. With the rise of ecommerce and the increasing importance of data-driven decision-making, AI adoption in retail and apparel has accelerated. The industry now relies on AI to enhance the shopping experience, optimize business operations, and gain an overall competitive edge.
