Amazon expands grocery delivery service to all US customers

The retailer unveils three reimagined Amazon Fresh stores in Los Angeles.

E-commerce major Amazon has expanded its grocery delivery and free pickup service to all US customers in cities and towns where Amazon Fresh is available.

The service was initially available only to Prime members, but the latest move also makes it available to customers who don’t have a Prime membership.

Customers can now order from local grocery and speciality retailers, including Cardenas Markets, Bristol Farms, Weis Markets, Save Mart and Pet Food Express.

The retailer will also extend its grocery delivery and free pickup service from Whole Foods Market to all US customers.

When fully launched, US customers from more than 3,500 cities and towns will be eligible to receive delivery of groceries in two hours from Amazon Fresh or Whole Foods Market.

Following the service expansion, Prime members can continue to access exclusive discounts and offers on selected items in-store and online at Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market.

Benefits include free shipping on orders above $100 from Amazon Fresh.

Amazon Fresh vice-president Claire Peters said: “We’re always looking for ways to make grocery shopping easy, fast and affordable for all of our customers. Now, all customers can order groceries online for delivery or pickup from Amazon Fresh across the US, with Whole Foods Market coming soon – even if they don’t have a Prime membership.

“This marks another step in Amazon’s journey to build a best-in-class grocery shopping experience offering incredible selection, value and convenience.”

Amazon also unveiled three updated Amazon Fresh stores in Los Angeles at Pasadena, Irvine and Woodland Hills.

These stores offer more than 2,000 new national and private-label brand products.

The retailer plans to continue opening new stores in 2024.

Amazon also recently revealed plans to close its physical retail clothing stores as it aims to focus on grocery stores.

Ecommerce market dynamics

The emergence of ecommerce has made it imperative that companies understand consumer behavior, deliver personalized service, and offer competitive pricing models. Ecommerce giants like Alibaba and Amazon dominate the space, supported by huge customer bases, robust mobile payment platforms, and technology expertise in areas like AI. Smaller players focus on disruptive business models, such as subscription services, to make their mark. Per GlobalData, the ecommerce market was valued at $5.9 trillion in 2022 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of >9% by 2027.
