Amazon powers up with 39 renewable projects in Europe

Once operational Amazon’s latest projects are expected to deliver 5.8 gigawatts of clean energy capacity across nine countries.

Amazon has unveiled its latest initiative, introducing 39 new renewable energy projects across nine European countries in 2023 so far.

This contributes more than one gigawatt of clean energy capacity to European grids.

Amazon's commitment to sustainability is evident as it surpasses 160 wind and solar projects in Europe.

Upon completion, these projects are anticipated to deliver a significant 5.8 gigawatts of clean energy capacity—enough to power more than 4.7 million European households annually.

Local impact and accelerating decarbonisation

This expansion involves diverse projects, including 15 rooftop solar installations on Amazon facilities and 24 utility-scale wind and solar initiatives, notably featuring the company’s first solar farm in Greece.

The strategic investment not only propels Amazon toward its goal of powering operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025 but also accelerates the transition to cleaner energy grids across various European nations.

Amazon's green investments drive economic growth

Amazon’s contribution to European economies through wind and solar farms has been substantial.

Between 2014 and 2022, Amazon’s wind and solar farms have helped generate an estimated €2.4bn ($2.56bn) in economic investment and more than 3,900 jobs in 2022 alone, underlining the tangible impact of these renewable energy ventures.

In addition, the company says the renewable energy farms have contributed more than €723m to Europe’s gross domestic product (GDP).

Europe’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy

Having held the position of Europe’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy since 2021, Amazon's latest investments span nine countries.

In a statement, Amazon EMEA director of energy Lindsay McQuade said: “Corporate investment is an important catalyst to help transition toward a clean energy future and we look forward to continuing to work with governments, local communities and energy providers across Europe to deliver more renewable energy into local grids.”

From rooftop solar projects in Belgium, France, Italy, Spain and the UK to utility-scale solar and wind projects in Finland, Germany, Greece, Spain, Sweden and the UK, Amazon is not only driving clean energy adoption but is also a key player in reshaping Europe's energy landscape.

Accelerating the goal: 100% renewable energy by 2025

With 90% of Amazon's global electricity consumption powered by renewable sources in 2022, the company is on track to achieve its ambitious goal of 100% renewable energy across operations by 2025, five years ahead of the initial target.

This commitment covers powering Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centres, fulfilment centres and physical stores.
