The British arm of German supermarket chain Aldi has reported a record-breaking Christmas in 2023 as sales hit more than £1.5bn for the first time.

In the four weeks ending 24 December 2023, Aldi's sales increased by 8% compared to the same period in 2022.

The surge in sales was driven by a demand for its products, which resulted in a significant number of shoppers switching to Aldi from traditional full-price supermarkets.

Aldi said that its busiest trading day was on 22 December, with 2.5 million customers visiting its stores for their Christmas shopping.

Aldi's products, including its Specially Selected Wagyu Rib Joint and Specially Selected Crackling Gammon Joint, contributed to the sales boost during the festive season.

Aldi UK and Ireland CEO Giles Hurley stated: “As the UK’s cheapest supermarket, we were able to help customers enjoy the Christmas they deserve and provide them with high-quality products at the most affordable prices.”

The retailer has committed to further price reductions throughout 2024.

Hurley added: “As we look ahead to 2024, our promise to customers is that they will always make significant savings on every shop with Aldi because we have the lowest grocery prices in Britain.”

Aldi introduced a new round of price cuts in the UK on household grocery staples ahead of Christmas 2023.

The supermarket has lowered prices on 40 products by an average of 10%, including reductions on beef mince, chicken goujons, sausages, salmon fillets and a range of produce items and cupboard staples.
