The shopreme ecosystem connects all self-checkout clients, driving efficiency and convenience.

Supermarket chain Aldi Nord is testing self-checkout technologies from unified self-checkout solutions provider shopreme in its stores in the Netherlands.

The retailer is introducing Scan & Go, self-checkout kiosks and exit terminals in several stores in the country.

Testing will include integrating the shopreme software development kit (SDK) into the ALDI customer app, offering an improved app experience for both new and existing users.

With this app, customers can use any payment method, including iDEAL, debit card, credit card, Google Pay and Apple Pay, to complete their purchases.

Customers can leave the store by scanning an exit code at the shopreme vector terminal that opens the checkout gate.

Besides, customers can also scan their products at the shopreme matrix self-checkout kiosk for an alternative shopping experience.

The shopreme ecosystem connects all self-checkout clients, improving efficiency and offering convenience with a hybrid shopping experience.

This is the first time ALDI Nord is testing self-checkout solutions in its stores.

ALDI Nord self-service checkout & cashless payment team lead Dr Christian Bock said: "At ALDI Nord, we are systematically leveraging the advantages of digitisation and automation. To offer our customers a hassle-free experience, we are testing different shopping experiences and evaluating modern checkout systems.

“Shopreme has proven to be a reliant partner to gain a bigger picture of future checkout technologies, also referring to our in-store processes. These aspects play a crucial role when developing a long-term checkout strategy."

Last year, ALDI Nord partnered with Israel-based computer vision company Trigo to open an artificial intelligence (AI) powered autonomous supermarket in Utrecht, Netherlands.

Traditional AI is here to stay in the retail and apparel space

Initially, retailers used AI for basic tasks, including inventory management and demand forecasting. However, its usage has now become more prevalent in other aspects such as personalized marketing, customer service, pricing optimization, and supply chain management. With the rise of ecommerce and the increasing importance of data-driven decision-making, AI adoption in retail and apparel has accelerated. The industry now relies on AI to enhance the shopping experience, optimize business operations, and gain an overall competitive edge.
