A report from consumer group Which? has named Aldi as the cheapest supermarket chain in the UK in July 2024 for a second consecutive month.  

The study, which considered the cost of groceries and household essentials, revealed what shoppers could save by switching to Aldi from Waitrose, which was named as the UK's priciest supermarket.

The consumer group's research, released in early August 2024, highlights a significant price gap between the two retailers, with Aldi £33.11 less expensive on average per week. 

Aldi beat its rival discounter Lidl by £2.36.  

Waitrose averaged £146.98 for a basket of 63 popular grocery items - 29% more than Aldi. 

Even when factoring in loyalty card discounts from other supermarkets, Aldi maintained its position as the most cost-effective option.  

Sainsbury's and Tesco were found to be £15.94 and £13.63 more expensive, respectively, even after applying loyalty prices. 

Aldi UK buying managing director Julie Ashfield said: “We’ve always promised our customers that we will never be beaten on price and the latest Which? analysis has shown just how much shoppers can save. Over the past six months, shoppers could have saved a significant amount, showing that when it comes to price – nobody can match Aldi.” 

The report underscores the importance of price comparison in the retail sector and the potential for consumers to make substantial savings by choosing more economical shopping destinations.
