Walmart has launched a pharmacy delivery service to bring prescription medications to customers in as little as 30 minutes.

The service is already operational in six US states: Arkansas, Missouri, New York, Nevada, South Carolina and Wisconsin. It will be launched across 49 states in the US by the end of January 2025, potentially serving tens of millions of customers.

It allows customers to receive both new prescriptions and medication refills alongside other merchandise in a single order.

Walmart, which operates 4,600 pharmacies and 3,000 vision centres nationwide, also offers flexibility to schedule a delivery at a time that suits the customer’s needs.

The new service will be complimentary for members of its Walmart Plus membership programme, while non-members will be charged $9.95.

Walmart US pharmacy senior vice-president Kevin Host said: “Our extensive footprint across the nation combined with our deep expertise in pharmacy uniquely positions us to make a profound impact in the communities we serve.

“We understand that health care is not a one-size-fits-all solution. It’s hyper-local. Each community has unique needs. This new offering allows us to continue serving customers while also giving more time back to our pharmacies for high-touch health services.”

The announcement follows shortly after Amazon revealed plans to open pharmacies with same-day delivery options in 20 new US cities by 2025.

A recent survey indicated that 55% of Walmart customers would like their prescriptions delivered with their groceries and other essentials in one online order.

The service was particularly popular among time-sensitive and busy families.

Walmart recently announced its plan to integrate advanced technologies, including AI, generative AI, augmented reality and immersive commerce, as part of its adaptive retail strategy.
