
In 1994, Walmart launched 122 stores across Canada and has since transformed from a traditional bricks and mortar retailer to a modern, omnichannel retailer.
To celebrate the milestone, the subsidiary of the multinational retailer is introducing its 30th Anniversary Rollback Event, providing discounts of 30% or more across its 100,000 available products in various categories.
Walmart Canada CEO Gonzalo Gebara commented: “As we look to the next 30 years, we’re going to continue doing what we do best: being there for our customers and families with products at every day low prices. That’s our promise to Canadians – and it’s the same one we launched with in 1994.”
As of 2024, Walmart Canada operates 403 stores throughout the nation. The approximate number of associates who will celebrate 30 years of service in 2024 amounts to 400.
Walmart Canada’s estimated direct, indirect, and induced economic contribution to Canada’s GDP in 2021 reportedly amounted to $21bn, making it a significant player in the nation’s retail sector.
The retailer has raised $750m for charities and non-profits across Canada since its launch in 1994. For its food bank partners, last year Walmart Canada delivered 12m pounds of surplus food and products donated by its stores and distribution centres. Its national fulfillment and distribution network amounts to 10m sqft.
Following the company’s decision to eliminate single-use plastic bags at checkout in 2022, approximately 680m plastic bags have reportedly been prevented from entering circulation annually.
In 2023, Walmart Canada launched unlimited, free next-day delivery service from all its stores in the country.
