Japan-based global apparel retailer Uniqlo has revealed plans to open its first store in Mumbai, India, as part of its global expansion strategy.

The new store is set to open on 6 October at Phoenix Marketcity mall in Kurla.

The brand’s parent company Fast Retailing stated that further details about the Mumbai store would be announced later.

The news follows a report by the Economic Times brand’s investment plans to expand its network of production partners in the country.

UNIQLO India chief executive officer Tomohiko Sei said: “We are delighted to be launching in Mumbai this fall.

“October will also mark the anniversary of our four-year journey in India and this new milestone highlights our strong, ongoing commitment to India.

“Until now, our customers in Mumbai have been using our e-commerce channel to shop for their LifeWear essentials and we now look forward to welcoming them in person to our first Mumbai store.”

The Japanese brand entered the Indian market in 2019. Since then, it has operated ten brick-and-mortar Uniqlo stores in the country’s northern region centred around New Delhi.

The new store in Mumbai will be the brand’s 11th location. The company chose Kurla due to the suburb’s mix of youth culture, entertainment and businesses.

Uniqlo opened its first highway store in India in April this year. The store is located in Punjab state.

Globally, the brand has more than 2,400 stores, most of which are located outside Japan.
