With the festive season drawing record numbers to high streets and holiday markets, Kingdom Security, a prominent UK-based security firm, has issued a stark warning to Christmas shoppers.

Following an annual increase in pickpocketing and theft across busy shopping areas, Kingdom urges everyone to stay vigilant.

A report by the Crime Survey for England and Wales shows approximately 2.8 million theft incidents took place between June 2023 and June 2024, with predictions for a seasonal surge as December footfall swells.

“At Kingdom, we’re advising holiday shoppers to be especially cautious this festive season,” says John Nussbaum, Kingdom Security’s Director of Service for Retail. “With the surge in shoppers, the environment is ripe for pickpockets.”

Nussbaum emphasises that seasonal crowds, which add pressure to retail staff, create an ideal setting for organised theft rings.

According to Kingdom, the influx of shoppers can make it difficult for both the public and retail employees to detect suspicious behaviour, underscoring the need for heightened awareness.

Enhanced security for busy shopping spots

To curb these risks, Kingdom Security has implemented strategic measures alongside retailers and shopping centres. Specially trained patrol teams, skilled in recognising potential threats, are being deployed to manage the influx of visitors and keep an eye on vulnerable areas.

Christmas markets, with their dense foot traffic and temporary stalls, are particularly at risk, prompting the need for proactive security efforts.

“Nationwide, we’re seeing a clear uptick in organised pickpocketing activity during the holiday period,” Nussbaum explains. “Having skilled security personnel is essential for protecting the public during this busy season. Our teams are working diligently to help retailers provide a safe environment for their customers.”

These trained personnel act as a significant deterrent against theft, as their presence alone can reduce criminal activity.

Kingdom’s security teams are placed strategically across high-risk zones, where they can monitor for suspicious activity, alert shoppers, and address potential threats. Their visibility and readiness allow shoppers to enjoy the festive experience while being subtly safeguarded.

Shoppers’ role: stay aware to avoid theft

While security teams are vital in protecting public spaces, Kingdom Security insists that shopper vigilance is just as essential. “During this season, we ask the public to be our eyes and ears,” Nussbaum stresses. “Increased awareness could be critical in preventing theft and ensuring that more people enjoy the festive period without incident.”

Kingdom offers simple but effective safety tips to help shoppers avoid falling victim to theft:

  • Keep valuables secure: Use inner coat pockets for wallets and avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
  • Stay alert in crowded areas: Thieves often operate in groups, using distractions to confuse targets.
  • Report suspicious behaviour: If something doesn’t feel right, notify nearby security personnel or the police.

This holiday season, a collective effort by security teams and the public can make a significant difference. By staying vigilant, shoppers can help prevent theft and keep the spirit of the season alive, ensuring everyone can celebrate with peace of mind.
