Omnichannel retailer Screwfix has disclosed an expansion plan that will see up to 35 new stores opening in the UK and Ireland by January 2026, creating more than 400 jobs within the respective local areas.

The retailer’s expansion strategy revolves around the recently launched Screwfix City store format.

Screwfix City stores are strategically situated in areas with high pedestrian traffic to ensure customers have convenient access to essential products.

These stores offer a selection of more than 3,000 essential items available for immediate Click and Collect, with an additional 48,000 products accessible online for next-day collection.

In September 2024, the retailer revealed plans to open up to 20 Screwfix City stores by the end of the year.

In fiscal 2024, which spanned from 1 February 2024 to 31 January 2025, it inaugurated seven City locations.

In fiscal 2025, the brand anticipates that these urban store formats will constitute the bulk of its new launches.

Screwfix Sprint, the company’s expedited delivery service, promises product delivery to job sites or homes within an hour and is operational from the new stores.

Accessible exclusively via the brand’s app, Screwfix Sprint is now offered from 485 locations, reaching 58% of the UK population.

Screwfix has also made significant strides in sustainability by halving its direct carbon emissions since the fiscal year 2021/22, despite growing its store count from 790 to more than 900.

The reduction has been partly achieved through a transition from fossil fuel heating systems to air source heat pumps, which are now installed in more than three-quarters of stores.

All new Screwfix stores are equipped with air-source heat pumps or other efficient electric heating solutions, and the retailer’s entire network is powered by 95% renewable electricity.

Screwfix CEO John Mewett stated: “We’re proud to continue Screwfix’s amazing growth with our plans to open up to 35 new stores within the next twelve months. Despite the challenges facing the retail industry, investing in our store network remains central to how we can best support tradespeople to get their jobs done quickly, affordably, and right first time.

“Our customers continue to be busy, and we know how important it is to be near a Screwfix store. We are driving forward with our store openings and continuing to focus on providing the ultimate convenience for our customers through our ultra-compact store format, Screwfix City and rapid delivery service, Screwfix Sprint.”
