Discount grocery chain Save A Lot has announced a partnership with automated fulfilment solutions provider Fabric, to offer automated grocery delivery services in New York City (NYC), US.

The announcement comes as the partnership’s micro-fulfilment centre is set to open in October 2024 in a Brooklyn warehouse.

The collaboration will combine the retailer’s affordable grocery essentials with Fabric’s automation to provide value-conscious consumers with greater convenience.

With the new Brooklyn micro-fulfilment centre, Save A Lot is expanding its reach in NYC, improving its last-mile delivery options.

Orders from this centre will be delivered through the Uber Eats app by Uber couriers.

Fabric’s automated facilities have retention rates in 90% of its ranges, attributed to better wages and reduced turnover compared to traditional grocery stores.

This operational efficiency allows Fabric to assemble large grocery orders of up to 50 items, within six to eight minutes.

This rapid fulfilment capability enables swift 30-minute pick-up and delivery options, potentially transforming the economics of grocery delivery by marrying low-cost automation with the affordability of discount grocers such as Save A Lot.

Save A Lot chief operating officer Bill Mayo said: “Our partnership with Fabric and expansion into micro-fulfilment will streamline operations and allow us to offer accessibility to consumers wherever they are at competitive prices. We’re excited to bring this affordable, convenient shopping experience to the New York market.”

The partnership’s inaugural consumer delivery centre will be equipped with Fabric’s advanced cube-based storage system.

This system will automate the fulfilment of Save A Lot’s groceries, exclusively for direct-to-consumer delivery across Brooklyn.

Fabric’s automation solutions are designed to streamline operations, increase efficiency and improve customer experiences.

Fabric co-CEO Curt Avallone said: “Our micro-fulfilment technology improves efficiency across the supply chain, helping retailers address the broader operational needs while delivering an exceptional customer experience. We’re proud to support the mission to make quality, affordable groceries more accessible.”
